Giant growth spurts are only fun in moderation.

So, we have some lovely news: Madeline doubled her birthweight in just over two months.

Pro: She's definitely getting enough to eat. At nearly 3 months, she weighs about 13 pounds.
Con: Her sweet little life so far has been one big growing pain, I think... her tummy still can't seem to handle its job without giving her a hard time. Remember that post a while back when I said she didn't have full-blown colic? It just took her some time to develop it. She seems to be slowly getting better... we don't have to hold her 24/7 anymore, and we literally did before (and she was still uncomfortable and unhappy a lot)... and obviously neither her spitting up nor her scream-off-the-calories exercise program are affecting her weight gain. It's considered a healthy weight gain pattern for babies to double their birthweight in SIX months. This girl has been gaining well above average ounces per week; she may have been born in the 14th percentile, but she is catching up!

(Thank goodness for gripe water, which does help when she gets on a crying jag. Oh, and did I mention that she also has an umbilical hernia? We're treating that with cotton and tape, and it seems to be getting better, too. We hope it finishes healing soon, because Madeline loves full baths and she's on a mostly-sponge-bath regimen until she doesn't need to be taped anymore.)

Pro: She's as chubby as all get out. Very kissable!
Con: She may need size two diapers before we've used up all of the size ones!

Pro: She fit perfectly in her blessing dress (which was my blessing dress, once upon a time). I was afraid it would be way too big.
Con: I've had to put away her newborn-sized clothes—I guess this isn't a real con, because she has cute 0-3 month clothes too, and most babies outgrow NB stuff in, like, days. But still... *sniff sniff*

So, in conclusion, while the last 11 weeks haven't always been the happiest growth spurt, we are all heathy and growing. Josh and I are growing patience, endurance, parental intuition, and new resilience to sleep deprivation. (It's like college all over again... only worse... and there aren't any weekends, reading days, or vacations to take naps.)

And Madeline is growing inches, and pure chub. She is more kissable than ever, if such a thing is possible.

(Pictures will be added to this post soon... the computer with the best pictures isn't here at the moment.)

Geneil, all I can think when I read your posts about Madeline's dear little tummy is that if any Mommy can be the saint to handle this difficult time, it is you! You two are marvelous parents and although some days may seem like an eternity, those months will pass before you know it (and thus out of colic!). Can't wait to see more pictures of the little cherub - way to go little girl, bring on some cute rolls! :)

If she continues to double every 3 months, she will exceed the mass of the earth by her 21st birthday.
