Well, it's time for another football score prediction. Last week, I predicted that BYU would prevail over UNLV 38-24 in a tough game at home. As it turns out, BYU won 42-35 in a game that wasn't over until BYU intercepted UNLV's quarterback in the endzone with just seconds left on the clock. So my prediction was close--or at least, much closer than the previous week's commentary on the game at TCU...
Which brings us to this week's opponent--Colorado State University. CSU used to be a really good team. Since I began following BYU football as a freshman in 2000, CSU has beaten BYU 3 times, played them close 3 times, and lost by more than 20 just once--in 2006. They have gone downhill in the past couple years, but are showing signs of life with a new coach and a new offense. Just 3 weeks ago, they held TCU to just 13 points in a 13-7 loss--the same TCU that beat BYU by 25 the following week. Like UNLV last week, they will be primed to give BYU their best shot, especially since they haven't actually beaten BYU since 2003.
BYU, on the other hand, isn't getting mentally psyched out because of a Top 10 ranking anymore, and they actually seemed to play with some emotion last week. What they are not doing is stopping anyone on defense these days. Six weeks removed from consecutive shutouts, the BYU defense is looking about as bad as most people thought they'd be after losing 8 starters from the previous year.
This should be another relatively high-scoring game. I don't think CSU is a complete enough team to knock off the Cougars, but I don't think the Cougars are playing well enough on defense to put CSU away until the 4th quarter. BYU 27 CSU 24.
